Blue Heart, Blue Soul (2001)

There is only one word for both green and blue in the Vietnamese language – sang. When generally used it means ‘colour of the sky’ or ‘colour of the grass’. When used with its’ respective prefixes it’s possible to be more specific. This only usually happens in poetry.

I paint in acrylic on metre square canvas, using blue and green hues. I work from sketches made of couples, simplifying and breaking down their shapes to create clear, multi-faceted representations of form. I represent the relationship between the two abstractions by the measure of space between them. I include one small area of warm colour to complete the composition. This last application is common in Vietnamese art, used to signify purity.
